The Waddlepus (アワダコ, "Bubbly Octopus") is an aquatic enemy in Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4. It appears to be a purple starfish-like creature with several yellow protrusions on its back. It is harmless and incapable of killing your Pikmin.
The Waddlepus sits idly and is generally passive. However, once a Pikmin or Leader is in its line of sight, it will inflate its back and blow bubbles everywhere which will encase the Pikmin and/or Leader(s), sending them floating away until they pop. You can pop the bubbles prematurely by throwing a Pikmin at them. When attacked, it will slowly waddle around, and inflate to shake off the Pikmin.
The Waddlepus can blow bubbles in two different ways:
1: If Pikmin are standing in front of it, it will shoot a stream of bubbles from its mouth.
2: If Pikmin are attacking it from above, it will force all the yellow holes on its body to protrude and expel bubbles from them in every direction.
It can be noted that the Waddlepuses found in at least Beastly Cavern on Battle Enemies mode is significantly weaker than the average one.
Notes
Pikmin 3 Prima Guide
"The Waddlepus is a relatively large amphibious creature. This enemy uses bubbles to temporarily incapacitate nearby attackers. When you encounter this creature on dry land, flank the Waddlepus and have your squad charge the enemy from the rear. If any of your Pikmin become trapped in a bubble, attack the bubble to instantly free the Pikmin.
The same tactics apply when you encounter this enemy in the water -- just make sure your squad only contains Blue Pikmin."
Dalmo's Notes
"This accomplished napper can snore away a whole day, but just watching the peaceful look on its snoozing face conveys a feeling of contentment. Also, if you get up close enough, it can blow bubbles that will envelop you. Have a fun float. It's like dreaming!"
Olimar's Notes
"Its eyes and stubby feet make it look like an octopus, hence the name. But it's closer in anatomy to a starfish. It sleeps during the day but will stay alert for approaching predators, which it drives off by puffing itself up and releasing bubbles. Closer research suggests that the true purpose for the bubbles is to protect its eggs during spawing season."
Louie's Notes
"Perfect for make-ahead meals! Marinate the boiled meat in balsamic vinegar, and chill for a few hours. The longer you let it sit, the richer the flavor!"
