Obstacles are a type of object appearing in Pikmin game. Like enemies, obstacles obstruct the progress of the leaders and their Pikmin, and each type of obstacle requires different amounts and/or types of Pikmin to overcome them. Each Area in each game has at least one type of obstacle.

Types of obstacles[]

Gates are obstacles that block paths or shortcuts and must be broken down with Pikmin. There are different types of gates in each game, many of which can only be destroyed by Pikmin of a specific type.

Hazards[]

Hazards are obstacles that can hurt the leaders and Pikmin. However, some are a weakness for some Pikmin types while being specialties to others.

  • Fire: An element that can burn all except Red Pikmin.
  • Water: All Pikmin except Blue Pikmin drown in water if left there for too long.
  • Electricity: An element that electrocutes anyone on contact except Yellow Pikmin.
  • Poison: It can intoxicate any Pikmin except White Pikmin.
  • Crush: Squishes Pikmin, causing them to die.
  • Explosion: The resulting blast of an explosion causes Pikmin to die.
  • Abyss: Results in an endless fall, killing whoever is caught in one.
  • Consumption: Refers to when an enemy eats a Pikmin.
  • Bubble: They trap leaders and Pikmin until they pop.
  • Sizzling floor: These are floors wreathed in flames.

Crystals[]

Many types of crystals are obstacles. The most common types are Small and large crystals, which usually encase an item or something essential for progressing further. As for large crystals, they typically block the path. Both types can be destroyed by having a Rock Pikmin hit it three and ten times, respectively.

Crystal Nodules are not hazardous on their own, although if there is a Skutterchuck nearby, it may pick one up and throw it at Pikmin. Like the small and large crystals, Rock Pikmin can break Crystal Nodule, but only have to hit it once.

Plants[]

Kingcap2

A Kingcap

Different types of fungi and plants appear in the Pikmin games in many forms, and some pose as obstructions to the player in different ways.

  • Kingcaps and Spotcaps: Large mushrooms in Pikmin 3 that usually appear in clusters, blocking a path or block access to an item of importance. They can be attacked with Pikmin to break them down. Kingcaps have health meters, but Spotcaps can be destroyed in a single hit by any Pikmin if thrown directly on top. While Spotcaps can respawn a few days after they are broken down, Kingcaps never will. In Pikmin 4, Kingcaps and Spotcaps were given hazardous poisonous variants, Poison Kingcaps and Poison Spotcaps, respectively.
  • Bloominous Stemples: Plants in cave areas that bloom by activating a nearby Electrode; once bloomed, a Bloominous Stemple can be used as a platform to cross the crevices.
  • Flukeweeds: Plants that can be uprooted with Winged Pikmin to reveal either Pellets, Fruits, or Sheargrubs.

Man-made[]

These obstacles are man-made or appear to be man-made.

  • Bridges: They are only obstacles while curled up, but a group of Pikmin can build it so that they and the leaders can cross it.
  • Cardboard boxes: These can be pushed by Pikmin to open a blocked path. They have very similar variations named tin boxes, except they are retextured and sometimes found underwater.
  • Clipboards: Flat objects that lie on the ground, blocking a path. They can be lifted by Winged Pikmin.
  • Conveyor belts: Large, metallic belts that constantly rotate in a single direction, preventing the leaders and their Pikmin from continuing in a direction.
  • Conveyor Switches: These are sets of yellow and blue buttons, and the unpressed one can be pressed to change the direction of the conveyor belts.
  • Electrodes: They are broken circuits found in several caves. They can be activated by Yellow Pikmin to light up an area.
  • Elevator Platforms: These are scales hanging from a pulley system. Leaders and their Pikmin can be lifted from standing on the side with less weight while applying some weight to the other side.
  • Paper Bags: These block a path, and require several Pikmin to overcome. In Pikmin 2, they can be crushed by a certain number of Pikmin on them, while in Pikmin 3, Paper Bags can be pushed off of a ledge.
  • Seesaw Blocks: A set of blocks functioning like a scale and very similarly to Elevator Platforms.

Miscellaneous[]

There are many obstacles that are unique and do not fit in any specific category.

  • Clogs: These are located in water-filled areas above ground, although some block the entrances to caves and sub-levels.
  • Dams: Blocks the Lily Pads from traveling down the Twilight River, but can be lifted with ten Winged Pikmin.
  • Dirt-mounds: These can contain items that can be dug out by Pikmin.
  • Hay: Pikmin can take off small pieces of the Hay, relocate them, and form a slope to access a higher area.
  • Hydro Jelly: Blue gelatinous material often blocking paths and containing objects. An Ice Pikmin can freeze a Hydro Jelly then destroy it.
  • Iron Balls: Can be pushed down a slope to crush enemies and smash through walls
  • Tunnel: Soft patches of soil needing to be dug through.
