Welcome To Pikmin School!

Learn about Pikmin

  • You can get a total of 25 Pikmin on the first day at The Impact Site; though only 20 are required for the first day to carry the Main Engine back to the ship. This is a timeless day, so you can leave your pikmin underground to mature into buds and then flowers.
  • Spotty Bulborbs can be killed with 40 Pikmin, constantly throwing them on its bum.
  • The minimum amount of Pikmin to complete the game is 50 Pikmin that can be any type.
  • Candypop Buds can change 5 Pikmin before they wilt in Pikmin 2, however in Pikmin 1, you can go nuts with them, but keep in mind that they revert flowered pikmin back into leaf pikmin.
  • Candypop Buds will only change Pikmin in intervals of 10 pikmin in the first game, but in the second game this is reduced to 5.
  • S.S. Dolphin's inserter will repair your space suit.
  • When Pikmin are caught in water, blow your whistle and they'll swim to shore, provided that they're close enough.
  • Pikmin die very fast when caught aflame.
  • Use Red Pikmin in careful situations, such as the Forest Navel.
  • Defeat Male Sheargrubs by raining down Pikmin.
  • You can throw pikmin faster by using the C-Stick to gather them around Olimar (original titles only, no New Play Control!).
  • Attack the Shearwigs until they take off, then toss your Pikmin at the flying nuisances to take them down.
  • Both Male Sheargrubs and Shearwigs have a literally "killing" grip.
  • Ignore Female Sheargrubs, they are harmless.
  • All Sheargrubs, and Shearwigs can ravel (break down) bridges.
  • The Chronos Reactor is the hardest non-boss fight ship part to get.
  • Use up a day to open paths to all areas of the level and clear the way for collecting ship parts by building log bridges, busting gates, and defeat enemies.
  • Mushroom Pikmin can be cured by shaking them off if they attack the Captain. If there's only one, you can throw another Pikmin towards it and it will turn normal again. Don't overdo it and use too many Pikmin, as they'll more than likely kill it.
  • The easiest way to kill all the Fiery Blowhogs in The Forest Navel is to take 50 or so (preferably Red) Pikmin and separate them into groups of 10 to attack different Blowhogs. A clear path will make retrieving ship parts much easier if you haven't bombed down any walls, or unravled bridges.
  • The easiest way to kill the Emperor Bulblax in Pikmin 1 is with about 10 Yellow Pikmin and 90 Red Pikmin. Give your Yellows Bomb Rocks and wake the beast. Put some distance between you and it, then toss a Yellow Pikmin into its path. Call your Pikmin back just before the Bulblax attacks and it will drop the bomb-rock, which explodes and stuns the monster. Once it's down, swarm its vulnerable face with all the Pikmin you have. The effect only lasts for a few seconds, so back off before it gets back up, and repeat.
  • The Beady Long Legs in The Forest Navel is easy to defeat if you take 10 to 15 Yellow Pikmin. Toss the Pikmin on it's 'head'. The Beady Long Legs will soon shake them off. When this happens, call your Pikmin back. Then Repeat until it's defeated. Note: Since the amount of Pikmin is small, there's a bigger chance that they won't get killed.
  • The Puffstool's head, when brought back, cashes in for 30 Pikmin!
  • Returning the Armored Cannon Beetle's remains (found at the The Forest of Hope and The Distant Spring to any Onion gives you 50 Pikmin! This is tied for 2nd as the best item to get pikmin from.
  • A good strategy in the Impact Site is to use 3 bomb-rocks to bomb the gate, then two to knock off a nearby Pearly Clamclamp, and the last to partially knock down the nearby gate.
  • The Pearly Clamclamp's pearl cashes in for 50 Pikmin!
  • The rare Smoky Progg, found before Day 15 in The Distant Spring, can cash in 100 Pikmin for its pearl!
  • In the Forest of Hope, a nifty little thing to get the Shock Absorber on the 2nd or 3rd day is to throw reds or yellows onto the ledge where the 5 red pellet is. Next, go to the water on the left, climb the log, go get your pikmin on the edge, sneak past the Spotty Bulborb, and the Shock Absorber is yours!
  • Glitch: Press 2 (Or down on the d-pad for Gamecube) to make Olimar lie down on the ground. He is impervious to all attacks while lying down. Dismiss your Pikmin first to try it. Note: If there are 4 or more pikmin following you, when you attempt this glitch, they will carry you to the onion, which will shoot out sparks.

Learn about Pikmin 2

  • Some difficult enemies in caves can be made to walk off the edge of the sublevel or through holes in the floor. The most notable example is the Gatling Groink.
  • (Spotty Bulbear now walks: be prepared!) Use an Ultra-bitter Spray on this enemy, or throw Purple Pikmin on its back. A good method of spotting it from afar is to tap the R button to zoom the camera out as far as possible, press the Z button to change to the overhead view, and then have your back against a wall so that you can see the Bulbear coming well in advance, and it also cannot come up behind you.
  • Certain Candypop Buds disappear when you have 20 or more of a certain color of Pikmin, such as in Emergence Cave, while others are always there.
  • The minimum amount of Pikmin that are required to gather all treasures is 103 Pikmin with use of Candypop Buds.
  • Iridescent Flint Beetles will drop a Spicy Drop if attacked multiple times.
  • Iridescent Glint Beetles drop two Spicy Drops after being overturned a few times.
  • Doodlebugs drop two Bitter Drops after being flipped over more than once.
  • Throwing Purple Pikmin is very helpful here against any Beetle, as the shockwaves produced by the Pikmin can knock the Beetles over without having to hit them directly.
  • While holding A to throw a Pikmin, select color and type (flower, bud, or leaf) with the D-pad.
  • You need 100 Purple Pikmin to get the Doomsday Apparatus.
  • The Subterranean Complex has three Violet Candypop Buds, and two Queen Candypop Buds on Sublevel 8, along with a geyser.
    • By going inside the Subterranean Complex with only one Pikmin, can result in 15 Purples, and 2 extra Pikmin every run through!
    • The Subterranean Complex also has four Ivory Candypop Buds, which can result in 20 extra Whites.
    • This strategy is recommended if you want to get the Doomsday Apparatus in an 8-day run.
  • As mentioned above, some Violet and Ivory Candypop Buds will disappear if you have a certain amount of Pikmin of that color, regardless of use. For example, the two in Emergence Cave disappear if you have 20 or more Purple Pikmin, allowing for some sneakiness and getting a grand total of 29 when you used to have 19, being enough to have the Buds still active! You can also get 29 whites if you get fourteen the first run , go in a second time and get 29.
  • Before going in caves, make sure the proportions of different types of Pikmin appropriate. For example, Bulblax Kingdom has fire and electrical hazards, so bringing 50 Reds and 50 Yellows is recommended.
  • However, the caves may have some hidden treasures that can only be obtained by White Pikmin, so bring a few along!

Enemies

  • Bulborb/Bulbear: Throw Pikmin on the beast's back, preferably without waking it. This is much more effective with Purple Pikmin.
  • Candypop Bud: Throw Pikmin in the flower to change types.
  • Smoky Progg: Yellow Pikmin must carry and throw bomb-rocks at the Progg to melt away its poisonous body.
  • Burrowing Snagret: Swarm upon it emerging with only its head above the ground.
  • In Pikmin 2, the Emperor Bulblax has less health and is smaller than in the first game, and so is easier to kill.
  • The Armored Cannon Beetle is the adult form of the Armored Cannon Beetle Larva, and is only found in Pikmin.
  • Dweevils: Have one Captain lay down near a Dweevil (smaller varieties only); you will need the Napsack for this. When it picks him up, wake the leader up. The Dweevil will bend down and the Pikmin will jump on its head in an effective attack.
  • Fiery Bulblax: Freeze it with Ultra-bitter Spray, then swarm with Red Pikmin and punch with the Captains. For places that Red Pikmin cannot reach, Purple Pikmin can harm the beast with their first hit, but must be called off to save them from the flames. Continue to throw and whistle. If the enemy is past a body of water, Blue Pikmin can be used to defeat it if it is lured into the water, at which point its fire is temporarily doused.
  • Raging Long Legs: Related to the Beady Long Legs, this enormous spider-like monster can crush smaller creatures with its wide feet. It poses a serious threat to large groups of Pikmin, but can also be used to your advantage in the 2-player stage, Angle Maze.
  • Bulbmin: This parasitic species of Pikmin has completely taken over the motor functions of its Bulborb host. Found in certain caves, adult Bulbmin will usually be followed by up to ten juveniles. Once the parent is defeated, these hardy little monsters can be added to your Pikmin army for the remainder of the cave and are immune to all hazards!
