A graphic of an Abyss from the High Scores menu of Pikmin 2.

Abysses are bottomless pits appearing in every game of the Pikmin series. Any Pikmin that falls into an abyss is not recoverable with a sound indicating their perishing being heard shortly afterward. Because of their ability to fly, Winged Pikmin are technically invulnerable to falling into pits, but will still die if thrown into one. Enemies are capable of falling into the Abyss, and while this instantly kills them in Pikmin 2, they will respawn next to the ledge they fell off of in Pikmin 3.

In Pikmin, the only location to have abysses is The Forest Navel. Abysses appear the most commonly in some caves of Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4, as well as in some Bingo Battle stages in Pikmin 3.

In Pikmin 2, Pikmin 3, and Pikmin 4, any treasures that fall into the abyss respawn to their initial location. The same goes with treasures being carried by enemies, assuming the enemy typically dies when falling into the abyss in that game.
