Sunset

Sunset in Pikmin 2

Sunset is an event which occurs in every game of the Pikmin series. It defines the end of a day, which means that any leaders and their Pikmin must stop their current tasks and fly away from the landing spots with the Onions, since many predators become active at nighttime. The background music softens shortly before it becomes sunset, when a notice onscreen warns that it is nearly sunset and that the player has to gather their Pikmin. Right before sunset starts, a countdown appears on screen, starting from 10, although it counts down every three seconds.

At the end of a day, Pikmin under the control of a captain and idle ones near to the ship and Onions will enters the Onions automatically, but any that are too far away from the landing area when sunset occurs will be killed by enemies, and their spirits are seen. Pikmin that are still in the ground are not killed and remain there, waiting to be plucked out by a leader.

Mainline appearances[]

Pikmin[]

In Pikmin, the end of day cutscenes for each area always have the same enemies. These are the enemies shown for each area:

Pikmin 2[]

In Pikmin 2, the end of day mechanic differs as it randomly selects harmful enemies that can be found within the area. More enemies appear if more Pikmin are left behind. The Purple Pikmin and White Pikmin will enter the Hocotate Ship at sunset, but enemies register the Pikmin as on the field, so if the ship is in the attacking range of an enemy, they will attack the ship. This is most noticeable when a Bulbear is in the blast off cutscene, since it has an infinite range.

Although any White Pikmin that is left behind gets killed, an enemy still dies from eating one.

Pikmin 3[]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and later Super Smash Bros. games, the Sunset is referenced during Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day, in which Olimar blasts off in his Hocotate Ship as it becomes dark and Bulborbs snack on the fighters, then he returns to the stage.
