Water is a hazard appearing in every game of the Pikmin series. While it is not hazardous to leaders, Water is lethal to every type of Pikmin except Blue Pikmin, which have gills, unlike other Pikmin types, and can move around in water. If a Pikmin other than the Blue type touches water, they begin to drown, and if the Pikmin is in the water for too long, it drowns and dies. It is possible for drowning Pikmin to jump out if they are close enough to land, especially if a leader uses their whistle on them repeatedly. Blue Pikmin also have the ability to rescue other Pikmin from drowning in water, even while idle.

Sometimes, if a Pikmin other than the Blue type is carrying a lightweight item and is close to water, they drop the item, being consciously aware of the water. Some pools of water can be destroyed by breaking the rock seal in the pools, thereby revealing a hole that will drain it.

Some enemies also release streams of water, such as the Watery Blowhog, Caustic Dweevil, and Titan Dweevil. If Pikmin come into contact with water ejected from enemies, it will collect on their leaves. Enemies that eject water will form small bubbles around the head of any Pikmin not of the Blue type, causing the Pikmin to panic. If not called back, the Pikmin falls on the ground and dies.

In Pikmin and Pikmin 2, idle Blue Pikmin can be used to throw drowning Pikmin to dry ground. Additionally, in Pikmin, the Goolix is the only enemy that can choke Pikmin using a water bubble.

In Pikmin 3, drowning Pikmin can more easily get out of water on their own, making water less dangerous. Winged Pikmin can fly over bodies of water to avoid contact with it.
