Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, lit. Great Fray Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U) unofficially known as Super Smash Bros. 4, are the fourth and fifth installments to the Super Smash Bros. series.

Olimar returns as a veteran from Brawl with the original five Pikmin types as well as with a new Skin in the form of Alph and the addition of Winged Pikmin.

Pikmin & Olimar

Captain Olimar and Pikmin - Super Smash Bros

Olimar was confirmed to be a playable character on the 12th of July 2013 (a day before the Japanese release of Pikmin 3) on the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U website.

In appearance, the captain has undergone a few changes from his appearance in the predecessor. Most noteably his whistle is now connected to the helmet, which was introduced in Pikmin 3. The top two buttons on his spacesuit have also changed from red to blue. He now also sports his company's logo on his arms.

Olimar will only pluck up to Pikmin at any given time, in the order of Red, Yellow, Blue, White, Purple, and then the cycle repeats. A group of Winged Pikmin lifts Olimar up for his recovery move. The player will be able to have Olimar lift his Pikmin with him as well, but this will make the Winged Pikmin fly slower and lower.

Alph appears as an alternate costume for Olimar; with his model, textures and announcer call being replaced to make him seem like a brand new character.[1]

Information

  • Pikmin appear to be slightly larger; Olimar's size appears mostly unchanged.
  • The following moves are visually unchanged from Brawl:
    • Side Tilt
    • Side Smash Attack
    • Down Smash Attack
    • Back Air Attacks
    • Down Taunt
  • Olimar now only have 3 Pikmin in his possession at one time.
  • Olimar's up special, originally Pikmin Vine, has been replaced with two Winged Pikmin.

Olimar's Moveset

Olimar keeps many of his standard moves from the previous game, though like most characters he receives two additional versions for each move which can be obtained as custom Special Moves.

Standard Special: Pikmin Pluck

Pikmin Pluck: Olimar plucks Pikmin. However, as stated, he can only carry three Pikmin, and to make the Pikmin use more strategy based, the Pikmin come in a set order (Red, Yellow, Blue, White, Purple, repeat). There are also 2 alternate versions of the standard Pikmin Pluck, Hardy Pikmin Pluck, and Explosive Pluck. Hardy Pikmin Pluck allows Olimar to pluck more durable Pikmin, though it takes longer to Pluck them. Explosive Pluck trippers an explosive effect when Olimar plucks them but makes the Pikmin less resilient.

Side Special: Pikmin Throw

Pikmin Throw: Unchanged from Brawl. He throws Pikmin, and the Pikmin, unless it's a Purple, will latch on. Purples knock the victim back. Besides the standard Pikmin Throw, there are two variants, Sticky Pikmin Throw and Tackle Pikmin Throw.

Stick Pikmin Throw makes thrown Pikmin harder to shake off, however, their attacks do less damage.

Tackle pikmin throw makes all Pikmin behave like Purple Pikmin.

Up Special: Winged Pikmin

Winged Pikmin: Two Winged Pikmin appear and lift Olimar and his Pikmin up. Opposite to his recovery move in Brawl, Pikmin Chain, the more Pikmin he currently has, the worse his recovery is. There are two variations, winged pikmin jump and mighty Winged Pikmin. Winged Pikmin jump makes Winged Pikmin pull you up very quickly while pushing players to the side. mighty Winged Pikmin makes going up with Pikmin the same as without, but you start slowly.

Down Special: Pikmin Order

Just like in Brawl, all wayward Pikmin are called back. There is another variation called dizzy whistle, which allows nearby players to turn around.no other variations conformed.

Final Smash

End of Day SSB4 Wii U

Olimar's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Olimar maintains the same Final Smash, End of Day, from his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Unlike Brawl where the Hocotate Ship always land in the middle of the stage, the Hocotate ship can be controlled when it crashes down the stage.

Garden of Hope Stage

The Garden of Hope is a playable stage for the Wii U installment of the series. Its 3DS counterpart is simply Distant Planet from Brawl.

Gameplay of the Stage

The main arena takes place in the second half of the area accessible once Louie runs away with the juice. There are a few changes, however:

  • The pieces of land are now connected by a Bridge.
  • The S.S. Drake is seen in the area with a Burgeoning Spiderwort and a Tin Box in Pikmin 3.
  • The cup, which is constructed out of Fragments, is now on land.
  • There are Elevator Platforms on each  of the end of the stage.
  • There is a Climbing Stick on the right half of the stage that can be stood atop or broken.
  • There is a Tin Can in place of the Bamboo Gate.
  • A Peckish Aristocrab will occasionally charge across the stage from the right side and destroy the pot. It will also damage any players it comes across.
  • The pot will be reconstructed in Pikmin who rush in from the background after a while of being broken.
  • Most significantly, the other parts of the area is no longer there; there is a massive waterfall instead

Hocotate Bomb

Hocotate Ship SSB4

The Hocotate Ship Bomb item, with Olimar and Sonic looking at it.

On Miiverse and the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U official website, Sakurai posted an image of Sonic and Olimar next to a small model of the Hocotate Ship, in which he stated that it is a new bomb item that, when triggered, flies up in the air, then crashes back down much like the Warp Star item. The Hocotate Ship is still used for Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day.

Post by Sakurai

"Pic of the day. Is this a spaceship from Hocotate? No-this is a bomb SHAPED like a spaceship. After liftoff, it will drop down when you least expect it."

Smash Run

Two enemies from the Pikmin series appear in Smash Run.

Red Bulborb

Bulborbsmashrun

Bulborbs will appear as enemies on the Super Smash Bros. 3DS exclusive Smash Run.

The Red Bulborb appears in Smash Run. It seems to be a basic enemy that attacks by charging. It seems to be based off of its Pikmin 2 design, having purple eyes instead of blue. This creature is quite powerful and can not be grabbed. The best way to defeat it is by staying at a distance and using ranged moves.

Iridescent Glint Beetle

GlintBeetleSmash

The Glint Beetle in Smash Run.

On a post revealed by Sakurai on Miiverse, the Iridescent Glint Beetle will appear as an enemy in Smash Run in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Hitting the creature results in the Bettle dropping gold, similar to the actual creature dropping nectar. If the player hits it harder, it will drop a larger amount gold. The Iridescent Glint Beetle will disappear after five hits or a certain amount of time.

Post by Sakurai

"There are other bonus characters that appear in this game, too. Here's an Iridescent Glint Beetle from the Pikmin series. Keep hitting it!! Keep hitting it for gold!!"[2]

Trophies

Brittany's Trophy as seen in SSB4.

Brittany had a post of the day dedicated to her trophy.

Post by Sakurai:

"Pic of the day. Here's one of my personal favorites, the trophy of Brittany from Pikmin 3. She won't be joining the battle, but her model and expression is well-designed."

Several other Pikmin trophies are featured in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, which are listed below. Some are featured in both the 3DS and Wii U versions, but some are exclusive to the Wii U.

Name Picture Description
Olimar Olimartrophyssb43dsOlimartrophyssb4wiiu

A veteran spaceship pilot for Hocotate Freight, Captain Olimar partners with Pikmin in Smash Bros. to help him in battle. Olimar is much stronger when he's got Pikmin with him, so keep them plucked and good to go. Pikmin abilities are based on their color - learn what each is best at!

Olimar (Alt.) Olimaraltssb43dsOlimaraltssb4wiiu

Pikmin aren't just good for attacking, you know. For example, when you throw them, they can pick up items on their way back. Only items that aren't very heavy, though! Also, if there's someone charging or shooting at you, a well-timed Pikmin throw can stop them in their tracks!

Pikmin are good for more than attacking, you know. For example, when you throw them, they can pick up small items on their way back to you, or latch onto containers to break them open! Also, if there are opponents charging or shooting at you, well-timed Pikmin Throws can stop them in their tracks.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

End of Day Endofdaytrophyssb4

On the planet Olimar is investigating, the native creatures become extra violent at night, forcing him to retreat to orbit every evening. His Final Smash works the same way; night falls and Olimar takes to the sky, leaving his foes to the mercy of the wildlife below. Olimar returns when dawn breaks, and you can adjust his less-than-safe landing!

Alph Alphtrophyssb43dsAlphtrophyssb4wiiu

Alph is a young explorer who crashed on the planet PNF-404. As the engineer of the S.S. Drake, he feels responsible for finding the missing crew and the ship after the crash. Waking up in a pond, Alph quickly encounters a tiny creature - it's a Pikmin!

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Red Pikmin Redpikmintrophyssb43dsRedpikmintrophyssb4wiiu

This Pikmin has a red body and a long, pointy nose. It was the first type of Pikmin Olimar ever met. In Smash Bros., they have the second highest attack power among the Pikmin. Like their fiery color suggests, they can attack with flames and withstand them.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

Blue Pikmin Bluepikmintrophyssb43dsBluepikmintrophyssb4wiiu

The blue Pikmin walks around with its mouth ajar. At home in the water, they're very helpful when objects are submerged and need retrieving. In Smash Bros., blue Pikmin have defense second only to purple Pikmin. They are also able to do more damage when thrown, so don't be shy about hurling them at foes.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

Yellow Pikmin Yellowpikmintrophyssb43dsYellowpikmintrophyssb4wiiu

This yellow Pikmin is sporting some pointy things on its head. Maybe those are ears? Hmm... Anyway, yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and are the lightest Pikmin in the Pikmin series. In Smash Bros., a thrown yellow Pikmin will fly through the air in a nice curve, zapping anyone it comes in contact with.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

White Pikmin Whitepikmintrophyssb43dsWhitepikmintrophyssb4wiiu

These tiny, white Pikmin have bright-red eyes. They are the fastest of the Pikmin, perfect for finding and retrieving hidden treasure. In Smash Bros., you can use them to poison your enemies. Since they can fly the farthest of any Pikmin when thrown, use them to poison enemies from afar.

Pikmin 2 (GC) Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Purple Pikmin Purplepikmintrophyssb43dsPurplepikmintrophyssb4wiiu

These purple Pikmin are the strongest, but they're also slower and heavier. In Pikmin, they can be thrown at animals to stun them! In Smash Bros., they're great for attacking and launching, but they've got a pretty short reach. Get close to your foe to make these little ones truly effective!

Pikmin 2 (GC) Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Rock Pikmin Rockpikmintrophyssb43dsRockpikmintrophyssb4wiiu

These Pikmin are made of solid rock, so they can stand up to a lot of attacks and won't get hurt when they get stepped on. They specialize in body blows, dealing a lot of damage when thrown, and they can also break right through glass and crystal. They can't latch on to other creatures, though. But that's OK - nobody's perfect!

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Winged Pikmin Wingedpikmintrophyssb43dsWingedpikmintrophyssb4wiiu

These pink Pikmin have big, blue eyes and nice wings to help them fly. In Smash Bros., they show up to carry Olimar and friends through the air. However, how high and far they can fly is affected by how many friends they have to carry. More Pikmin will weigh them down.

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Hocotate Bomb Hocotatebombtrophyssb43dsHocotatebombtrophyssb4wiiu

With the outward appearance of a Hocotate Freight ship, this is actually a bomb in disguise! Arm it by throwing it on the ground, and give it a nudge if you're impatient. It'll fly up into the sky, returning a short time later and exploding. Force your foes into the landing zone!

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

Iridescent Glint Beetle Glintbeetlessb3dsGlintbeetlessbwiiu

Hope you're not scared of bugs... In Pikmin, these guys drop nectar, but in Smash Run they drop coins instead. They hide, waiting for fighters to get too close...then strike! They're tough to catch, but your reward for success is coins, coins, coins. They'll slink away to sulk after being properly robbed.

A golden creature from Pikmin 2. They don't pop up very often at all, but when they do, they scuddle around speedily. When you flip them over, they drop nectar and rare treasures. In Smash Bros., they appear in Smash Tour, where you can bump into them to make them drop extra fighters!

Pikmin 2 (GC)

Bulborb Bulborbssb43dsBulborbssb4wiiu

These creatures from the Pikmin series have snail-like protruding eyes, huge mouths, and really bad tempers. They're known for snapping at fighters and trying to trample them underfoot. If you see one in a group of enemies, you should try to take it out fast - it'll shoot off and bounce around, hitting other enemies as it goes!

These creatures from the Pikmin series have snaillike protruding eyes, huge mouths, and really bad tempers. Despite their cute appearance, they'll happily gobble up Pikmin! In Smash Bros., they appear on the Garden of Hope stage, wandering around or chasing the poor Pikmin. Thankfully, they don't seem interested in the fighters duking it out.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

Charlie Charlietrophy

Charlie is the leader of a group that crash-lands on PNF-404. After he comes to, Charlie takes a look at his snowy-white surroundings and then tries to contact the rest of his crew, Alph and Brittany, with his KopPad. Getting no response, he starts walking and spots some small creatures. Hurrah! Some yellow Pikmin!

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

S.S. Drake Ssdraketrophy

While its name might remind you of the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake, this ship is actually named after Alph's grandfather. After the S.S. Drake crash-lands, Alph finds his way back to it and soon gets it working. However, the crew must locate the cosmic-drive key before the vessel can return to Koppai.

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Brittany Brittanytrophy

Brittany is part of the crew that crash-lands on PNF-404. She calls for help using her KopPad, and when Alph finally reaches her, he's got a bunch of Pikmin with him. Brittany doesn't let her deep fascination with these creatures distract her from giving Alph orders.

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Peckish Aristocrab Peckisharistocrabtrophy

This crab-like life-form from Pikmin 3 traps Pikmin in bubbles. When it appears in the Garden of Hope stage, it creates a path of destruction from one end of the stage to another, but if the central bridge isn't there, it'll just fall right down. You can tell where it'll appear by the telltale appearance of bubbles, so watch out!

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Pellets Ssb4pellets3dSsb4pelletswiiu

A crystallized nectar that contains the essence of the Pikmin's home world, these pellets are most often harvested from the plant life of the planet. Each pellet displays a number on its surface, and this number may increase over time. The Onion generates more Pikmin with bigger numbers.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (Wii U)

Yellow Wollywog Yellowwollywogtrophy

A frog-like creature from the Pikmin series with a strangely egg-shaped body. Though its legs are short and stubby, it is nevertheless capable of gigantic leaps, which prove deadly to any unfortunate Pikmin that happen to be nearby when it lands. Despite typically being found near water, it's not much of a swimmer.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

Iridescent Flint Beetle Flintbeetletrophy

These guys appear in the Pikmin series, dropping rare items and fleeing nearby Pikmin. Purple Pikmin can flip them over, making the whole "getting rare items" process a lot easier. According to Louie, cooking one of these guys yields a meal with a distinct and delicious flavor.

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

Swooping Snitchbug Snitchbugsmash4

A strange flying insectoid creature from the Pikmin series. Much like a fly rubbing its legs together, the Swooping Snitchbug has a habit of rubbing its hands. When it swoops down and snatches Pikmin from the ground, it doesn't eat them. Instead, it discards them after a few seconds. Why? Who knows?! Who cares?! They're free!

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 2 (GC)

Burrowing Snagret Burrowingsnagretsmash4

A foot-long bird doesn't sound all that large, but when you're the size of a Pikmin, a foot is massive! This member of the avian family will emerge from underground, hunting for Pikmin, its favorite snack. Act fast - or this bird of prey will prey on your poor Pikmin!

Pikmin (GC) Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Louie Louietrophyssb43dsLouietrophyssb4wiiu

Louie worked for Hocotate Freight in Pikmin 2. His appetite has gone into overdrive in Pikmin 3. Rescued from a swarm of Scornets by Alph and crew, Louie thanked them the next day by stealing all of the food they'd collected. Maybe he should work on his manners more than getting a meal...

Pikmin 2 (GC) Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Quaggled Mireclops Mireclopstrophy

A gigantic creature that appears in Pikmin 3. It's so large that it has often been mistaken for a forest. It's pretty docile until its crystal head is attacked, at which point it goes on a rampage! It'll lose its balance if the hooves are attacked. Be careful, though - it likes to slurp up Pikmin with its tongue.

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Plasm Wraith Plasmwraithtrophy

A mysterious life-form in the Formidable Oak, the final area of Pikmin 3. Formed from a gelatinous substance, it normally can't be damaged at all...but with Olimar newly rescued, maybe he holds the key. When it takes humanoid form, it unleashes some terrifying attacks. You'll need all your skills to take it down and finish the game!

Trivia

  • Olimar was the first veteran to be revealed after the initial trailer.
    • He was also the first character to be revealed after E3 2013 ended.
    • When Nintendo of America first tweeted about the release of Olimar as a playable character, they made a mistake, and put that Alph was a playable character in the game. They quickly fixed this error (Alph was actually put in the game as an alternate color of Olimar).
  • Alph was planned to be promoted a full character rather than an alternate skin for Olimar. However, the developers ran out of time to differentiate and balance him so he remained an alternate skin.
  • Strangely, the description for the Olimar (Alt.) trophy only differs slightly between versions, rewording the paragraph while basically saying the same thing. The other trophies that appear in both versions have descriptions that are either word for word or completely different.
