Baldy Long Legs (ハゲダマグモ, Hage Dama Gumo, lit. "Bald Orb Spider") is an Arachnorb which appears in Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4. It is essentially just a tropical variant of the Shaggy Long Legs, with the adaptation of no hair to not overheat. However, this leaves it more susceptible to attacks than its hairy counterparts.

The Baldy Long Legs' only method of attack (like the majority of its family) is crushing Pikmin with its large feet. The feet are larger than that of Beady Long Legs. This creature will aimlessly wander the map (certain stages only), as it will not stay in one location. However, in the Forgotten Cove, it stays in the arena. The Baldy Long Legs moves only between two areas both times it is encountered in Pikmin 4 during the day. This trait is unique to this Arachnorb.

Olimar's Notes[]

A Shaggy Long Legs that has lost its hair. It has similarities to the Beady Long Legs, but it doesn't secrete wax from its exoskeleton and thus lacks its cousin's unique patterning. The absence of wax also allows small insects to climb its legs without slipping.

It's central orb splits horizontally, but researchers have yet to determine the significance of this difference.

Louie's Notes[]

Not as tasty as it looks. Completely inedible.

Dalmo's Notes[]

If you lie down and look up while this hulking critter is walking over, you'll be treated to an impressive view of its giant round body soaring past like an orbiting planet. Of course, you may get squished flat by one of it's massive feet and become a star yourself!

Strategy []

Like all Arachnorbs, the weak point of the Baldy Long Legs is its abdomen, which is suspended high up in the air by its spindly legs. As it marches around the field, it will crush anything in its path, so be sure to steer clear of its large, trampling feet. If Winged Pikmin are available (even in small amounts), the immediate decision should be to tackle the beast with them, as a maneuver as simple as a Charge can easily get them all onto its weak point without any risk. If only a small amount of Winged Pikmin are at your disposal, then using Ultra-Spicy Spray or other items can greatly speed up the process.

However, if no Winged Pikmin are accessible, it's best to use Rock Pikmin due to their resistance to the beast's crushing ability (keep in mind that they aren't immune to being crushed against a surface considered hard in Pikmin 4). Charge them (throwing will not work) at the foot that has most recently collided with the ground, and they will climb up and attack it as usual. If Rock Pikmin aren't accessible either, use the same strategy (be aware that throwing is now a viable method) but exercise more caution as they are now vulnerable to the boss's feet.

In Cavern for a King, The fight is relatively simple. If you have at least 10 Ice Pikmin from level six, you can freeze the water that it walks in, making it an easy fight. If such Pikmin are not available, Then use blues to your advantage on both sides. The mud side is not dangerous, and only slows you down, but Pikmin can easily drown on the water side, so be careful if you are using other Pikmin.

Another strategy is to use Ultra-Spicy Spray and any color Pikmin; simply wait until the Baldy Long Legs is near an elevated ledge, take the higher ground on said ledge, and throw Pikmin (preferably Red Pikmin, Purple Pikmin, or Rock Pikmin due to their greater attack strength) directly onto its head. This tactic can be used to quickly get rid of it with little to no Pikmin losses, as it will be too busy shaking off Pikmin to attack.

If encountered in a Bingo Battle stage, it is recommended that the players do not fight it together, as the player's Pikmin will be more prone to attacking the other player's Pikmin, rather than the Baldy Long Legs, which will probably result in many casualties and possibly even a Pikmin Extinction.

Trivia[]

  • The Baldy Long Legs almost never rests, only stopping occasionally to shake off Pikmin.
  • The true Baldy Long Legs is the only enemy in Pikmin 3 that doesn't appear in Story Mode.
  • Though a Shaggy Long Legs without hair looks very similar to a Baldy Long Legs, a Shaggy Long Legs' joints (where the hair once was) are of a light green color, while the Baldy Long Legs' joints are always black, blending in with the rest of its body, this may consider as a subspecies of that Arachnorb or simply as a breed of Baldy Long Legs if you discount the scientific name.
  • This is the only Arachnorb to be encountered in night mode.
    • When this creature is active at night, the red light of active enemy is around their orb, implying there are optical receptors there.
  • It is one of the two enemy's to be seen next to a Lumiknoll in the Piklopedia, the other being the Smoky Progg.
